World Heritage Site,Gokayama

Gokayama was registered as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in December, 1995.
Thatched-roof houses called Gassho-zukuri (style) are precious examples of an old farmhouse style which exist only in Gokayama and Shirakawa-go in Japan today.
In Gokayama, the World Heritage site, there are 23 Gassho-style houses in Ainokura and 9 in Suganuma. Many of those houses are 100 to 200 years old. The oldest ones are said to have been built 400 years ago. Those houses have the rational architectural design with a robust structure that can endure the harsh climate of this deep-snow region, which combines living and working spaces. Gassho-zukuri is the great invention created by people’s wisdom of living.
Ainokura and Suganuma are nationally-designated historic sites and preservation districts for groups of historic buildings as well as the World Cultural Heritage sites. About eighty people live there today.

Gassho-style houses in Ogi-machi, Shirakawa in Gifu Prefecture, and Ainokura and Suganuma, Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture were registered as a World Heritage site in the 19th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
23 Gassho-style houses exist in Ainokura. These have created a nostalgic scenery along with farm lands, stone walls, and snow break forests. In this district, there are Ainokura Folklore Museum, Gassho-style Inns, and souvenir shops. You can enjoy warm communications with local people, feel and experience their tradition and culture. Life, as it was in the good old days, is still alive in this small mountain village.
